Brooklyn Nets point guard D'Angelo Russell says the team's future is “in good hands” after the franchise extended the contract of head coach Kenny Atkinson.
Barring a collapse over the final four games, the Nets are on their way to making the playoffs for the first time since 2015.
Atkinson and Brooklyn general manager Sean Marks have completely turned the organization around, and Russell believes this is only the beginning:
“It’s in good hands,” Russell said, via Michael Scotto of The Athletic. “It’s like locking up your point guard and your center for your franchise. You’ve got good pieces around to build off of, and I think they’re the perfect two to do it.”
The Nets enter Wednesday with a record of 39-39. They are currently in the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference standings.
D'Angelo Russell becomes a restricted free agent this summer. After making his first All-Star team this season, the lefty has set himself up for a nice payday.
All signs point toward Russell and the Nets coming to terms on a long-term extension once free agency starts on July 1. Russell, who has a very strong relationship with Kenny Atkinson, is averaging 21.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game on the season.
