The Brooklyn Nets might lose D'Angelo Russell in free agency if Kyrie Irving decides to join the franchise.

The Nets are being mentioned as the likely destination of Irving, who opted out of the final year of his contract with the Boston Celtics to become a free agent this offseason. While getting the Celtics All-Star will be a step forward for the Brooklyn franchise, they might lose potential superstar Russell in the process.

According to Ian Begley of SNY TV, Russell is unlikely to return to Brooklyn if they eventually acquire Irving. While no reason was stated, it cannot be denied that the two point guards might not mesh with each other, as they both need the ball on their hands a lot to become effective.

If he decides to test the market, Russell is expected to get a lot of suitors. The 23-year-old is coming off the best season of his young career, as he averaged 21.1 points on top of 7.0 assists and 3.9 rebounds. The former Ohio State standout also made his first All-Star appearance and helped the Nets end their three-year playoff drought.

As for Irving, most of the signs are pointing to a move to Brooklyn. After opting out of the final year of his contract, Irving fired his agent and joined ROC Nation Sports, which was founded by Jay-Z. The rapper and business mogul was previously linked to the Nets, as he was a minority owner before establishing ROC Nation Sports.
