Dallas Mavericks fans who chanted “Fire Nico” during the team's home game at American Airlines Center on Monday against the Milwaukee Bucks appear to be getting what they wished for a long time — or since Luka Doncic was shockingly traded in February to the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Mavericks are reportedly expected to fire Harrison from his role as the team's general manager.
On Monday, fans loudly voiced out their disapproval of Harrison during the fourth quarter of the Bucks game. Despite Dallas ending up winning the 2025 NBA Lottery and selecting Duke Blue Devils star Cooper Flagg as the class's top pick overall, it was clearly not enough to quell the anger Mavericks supporters have for Harrison.
It did not help Harrison that Dallas is having a rough start to the 2025-26 NBA season. They are 3-8 after the 116-114 loss to Milwaukee, the manner of which further fueled Dallas' fans' fiery emotions. The Mavs had a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter, but it quickly evaporated as Antetokounmpo and Kyle Kuzma teamed up to show the Bucks the way to a come-from-behind victory.
Following the loss to Milwaukee, Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd addressed the “Fire Nico chants” that reverberated inside Dallas' home.
“It’s noise, and so I would say that, speaking for them, I think just continue to keep playing,” Kidd said during the postgame press conference.
Apparently, it was more than just noise. It was an answered prayer for those who have been longing for a change in the Mavericks' front office, particularly in the general manager position, ever since the Doncic trade, which also involved oft-injured superstar big man Anthony Davis.
It will be interesting to see what kind of landscape the Mavericks will have in the post-Nico Harrison era. Dallas is far from an NBA title contender status at the moment. Its record is second-worst in the Western Conference, and its minus-6.3 differential is fourth-worst in the conference through 11 games. Then, of course, there's the question about who will succeed Harrison as the Mavericks' new general manager? In any case, Harrison's successor will have an intriguing situation to deal with.
