Mavs star Luka Doncic could be sidelined for a couple of weeks after being diagnosed with a right ankle sprain, leaving Kristaps Porzingis as the team's primary option. Kristaps knows he'll have an increased role, but he's not looking to carry the team. Instead, the Latvian-born big man is hoping to improve his own game, all while staying within Dallas' offensive system.

Porzingis, who agreed to a five-year deal worth $158 million to stay with the Mavs in January, did not play in the 2018-19 season, as he was recovering from a torn ACL. He's returned to action now, though, and he's looking to get back to his former prowess in Dallas.

Though he says he wants to do what's best for the team, Porzingis will likely be the focal point of the Mavs' offense until Doncic is well enough to return. Kristaps logged 40 minutes in Saturday's 122-118 overtime loss to the Miami Heat, scoring 22 points on 7-of-21 shooting, 14 rebounds and two blocks.

In his 24 appearances this season, Porzingis has racked up averages of 16.8 points on 39.7 percent shooting from the field (32.6 percent from beyond the arc), 8.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 2.0 blocks in 30.6 minutes per outing.

Doncic turned his ankle after landing on the foot of Heat guard Kendrick Nunn in the opening minutes of Saturday's game against the Heat. Luka limped off the court, then went down behind the basket. X-Rays that were taken came back negative, but he did not return to action. Some reports have indicated that Doncic could be back soon after Christmas. However, the the Mavs will likely be cautious with their approach to his return.

Dallas will be back in action on Monday night, when they'll face off against the Milwaukee Bucks. Tip-off inside the Fiserv Forum is set for 8:00 p.m. ET, with NBA TV having live broadcast coverage.
