Behind high-scoring nights from Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, the Dallas Mavericks took down the Minnesota Timberwolves in a Western Conference showdown.  During the game, Timberwolves big man Rudy Gobert had words for Doncic, which the latter addressed after the game.

“When you start that, you know, it comes back to you,” Doncic said, as per The Wings Bulletin's Landon Thomas.

Considering how Gobert went viral years ago against the Mavs courtesy of Jalen Brunson's dribbling skills, talking trash to a scorer like Luka Doncic could have been a recipe for another lowlight. Thankfully for Gobert, there were no viral clips this time, but his words did come back in the form of Doncic's 34-point night.

The Mavs superstar hit five three-pointers, adding eight assists and six rebounds during Sunday's game. Gobert on the other hand, finished with nine points and 17 rebounds.

The Mavs prevail in a tightly contested game

The showdown went down to the wire, with the Mavs finishing strong in the final minutes of regulation.

An 11-0 run put the Timberwolves up by six, 106-100 with 3:50 left in the game. Mavs big man Dwight Powell answered, converting a three-point play by scoring underneath the basket and sinking a free throw.

With the lead in sight, Kyrie Irving smelled blood, sinking back-to-back three-pointers to put the Mavs up by three, 109-106. A dunk by Derrick Jones Jr. with 24.5 seconds left sealed the game for the Mavs.

Alongside Doncic, Irving's clutch three-pointers capped off his 35-point outing. “Uncle Drew” sank six three-pointers, tallied eight rebounds and dished out five assists as well for Dallas.

For the Timberwolves, Anthony Edwards had a double-double of 36 points and 10 rebounds.

The Mavs to continue their three-game winning streak against the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday.
