Following the tragic events that occurred in Boulder, Colorado on Monday in which a gunman shot and killed 10 people–ranging from ages 20 to 65–Jamal Murray of the Denver Nuggets delivered a stunned response to the needless killings:
“Ten lives just gone like that. Snap your fingers. Go in a shop. Get some food, get some eggs, get some milk. It’s crazy how it can happen that easy, that quick,” the Nuggets star told Mike Singer of Denver Post. “I got a King Soopers right by my place. … My condolences to the families. My prayers up to them.”
Indeed, mass shootings are about as commonplace in the U.S. as fast-food chains, and it seems that despite these horrific murders taking place on a near-daily basis, little to no legislative changes have been made to curtail these tragedies.
Article Continues BelowJamal Murray has made some extremely prescient and powerful remarks over the years, including in last season's bubble playoffs following the NBA’s push for social justice. This short statement from the Nuggets guard follows in those same footsteps.
With access to artillery-strength weapons a frequent occurrence in the U.S., these incidents will continue to happen apace–with no end in sight unless meaningful legal change occurs at the highest levels. Until then, mass shooting will continue to be a heinous part of the “American experience.”
Perhaps the Nuggets and the rest of NBA should use their tremendous clout to focus on this issue in addition to its tremendous achievements in furthering social justice.
