The Detroit Pistons are reshuffling their roster by assigning 2018 second-round pick Khyri Thomas to the Grand Rapids Drive according to Adam Johnson of 2 Ways and 10 Days.

Third-year big man Henry Ellenson is also getting sent to the G League.

Thomas was drafted in the second round by the Pistons this past June and has yet to make his debut with Detroit. Although Thomas is a young shooting guard with potential, he's stuck behind a bevy of experienced guards at the position. Thomas is behind Reggie Bullock, Langston Galloway, and Luke Kennard on the depth chart, though Kennard is hurt at the moment.

It's better for Thomas to get reps in the G League than simply toil away on the Detroit bench. There's also no need to rush him into action before he's ready. If he deserved time ahead of the other players at the position, he would have had his opportunity. Additionally, point guards Ish Smith and Reggie Jackson garner some of the most minutes on the team.

It was always going to be tough for Thomas to carve out a role in the rotation this year. But this could be a blessing in disguise for the rookie. He can use the G League to develop into a dependable role player for Detroit.

While there's still optimism around Thomas, Ellenson is a different story. The Pistons did not pick up the option on the fourth year of Ellenson's contract, and it has become clear that they are ready to move on from the 6-foot-11 big man.
