For the first time in ages, the Golden State Warriors are entering the offseason full of uncertainty. Gone is their aura of invincibility. Gone is the annual assumption that they will win the title next season. Gone is their dynasty.
After falling to the Toronto Raptors in six games in the NBA Finals and seeing both Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson go down with devastating injuries in the process, the Warriors are essentially in crisis mode, and there really isn't an escape route.
No matter what Golden State does this summer, it will be without two of its best players for just about all of next season, and now, the Dubs have gone from consistent title favorites to just hoping to make the playoffs.
With a pivotal offseason looming, let's examine three ways the Warriors can make this summer perfect, or at least as perfect as they possibly can given the circumstances:
3. Sign a Big Man
Here is the problem with Golden State: it has absolutely no cap room and won't have any cap room to no matter what it does. So, even if the Dubs want to re-sign their own players, they will be hit with a massive luxury tax bill.
But, if the Warriors want to try and revive their dynasty for 2020 and beyond, they are going to need to sign a big man.
Now, the most natural course of action would be re-signing one of DeMarcus Cousins or Kevon Looney, both of whom made a huge impact this postseason. On that same token, both may very well find themselves out of the Dubs' price range.
Looney in particular probably made himself millions these playoffs, as his versatile defense and improving offensive game will certainly have some teams calling.
As for Cousins? He might still have to settle for a one-year deal, but even he might be too pricey for the Warriors at this point.
Regardless, Golden State needs a center going forward.
2. Re-sign Klay Thompson
This one is going to happen no matter what, so it's pretty much a formality.

Thompson has shown no indication that he wants to leave the Bay, and the Warriors have shown no indication that they would be willing to let him walk. So, Thompson will be back.
Of course, Thompson will miss most of next season as a result of a torn ACL, but, at the very least, the Warriors will be able to lock up Thompson for the long haul and attempt to maintain their classic trio of Thompson, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
Thompson also won respect around the league forever for his gritty performance in these finals.
1. Re-sign Kevin Durant
Obviously, this is the biggest wild card of Golden State's summer.
Will Durant re-sign?
Oddly enough, I think Durant tearing his Achilles in Game 5 of the finals and the Warriors then proceeding to lose to the Raptors actually made it more likely that he will stay, as rival teams may now be more reluctant to sign him and Golden State made it clear that not only is Durant wanted, but that he is also needed.
What seemed like a foregone conclusion a couple of months ago is now a genuine question: will Durant leave?
While we don't know if Durant will ever be the same again, if the Warriors are able to retain both him and Thompson, we should probably put the “dynasty is over” talk on hold.
