3 Warriors overreactions after destruction of Celtics in Game 2 of 2022 NBA Finals

Klay Thompson is not back

For many years Klay Thompson has been a perfect sidekick to Steph Curry. His impressive off-ball movement and efficient shooting is an ideal fit within the Warriors' system. However, Thompson has significantly struggled through the first two games of the series. In Game 2, Thompson's scored 11 points on 4 of 19 shooting. He was just 1 for 8 on three-point attempts and was the only starter without a positive +/- rating.

While Steph Curry is terrific, he needs help from the supporting cast if the Warriors are to succeed as a team. Jordan Poole was able to catch fire and give the team a necessary offensive boost in the second half. He ended with 17 points and was 5 for 9 on three-point attempts. Both Jordan Poole and Klay Thompson struggled in the first half and combined for just 5 points on 2 of 13 shooting.

While Poole was able to turn it around, this was not the case for Klay Thompson. Steve Kerr even gave the 32-year-old extended time on the court while the game was decided with the hope he could shoot out of his slump. This did not prove to be the case as Thompson missed a number of good looks. Although the Warriors were able to secure the win regardless, the team will need Thompson to turn it around moving forward. Whether it is rust or just a shooting slump, the bottom line is the Warriors need their sniper to get back to the offensive weapon he is capable of.

Draymond Green is vital to the Warriors

There will never be another Draymond Green. To some, he is one of the highest IQ players in the NBA whose impact is beyond the numbers on both sides of the court. To others, he is an incredibly annoying pest on the court who continually pushes the envelope and has a more lenient whistle for technical fouls than any other player in the league. The reality falls somewhere in the middle.

While you can certainly critique the on-court antics of Draymond Green, you cannot dispute his importance. The Warriors veteran ended with 9 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds, a block, and a steal in Game 2. He had an immense impact on the game and emotionally controlled it from start to finish. While there were questions if he should have picked up his second technical after a scuffle with Jaylen Brown, the Warriors should be grateful he remained in the game. Draymond Green was vital to Golden State's success in Game 2 and will continue to be throughout the Finals.

The series is Warriors to lose

While Boston had an impressive performance in Game 1, the Warriors were the favorites coming into the series for a reason. There is plenty of optimism surrounding the Warriors considering they have yet to play their best basketball. Steph Curry played well in Game 2 and tallied 29 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and knocked down 5 three-pointers. Outside of Curry, there was not a great deal of offensive production.

It was an impressive victory for the Warriors in Game 2 due to the nature of the win. Their ability to produce defensive success and impose their will on the Celtics was the biggest factor in the victory. However, it feels as if more offensive firepower is still to come. Jordan Poole was the Warriors' second-leading scorer with 17 points but was just 6 for 14 from the field in the matchup. Andrew Wiggins scored just 11 points and was 4 of 12 from the field. If one of the supporting members can begin scoring at a more efficient rate, it will be trouble for the Celtics.

The teams will now travel to Boston with a lot still at stake. It will be a difficult task to produce the same results in opposing territory but the Warriors will be looking to do just this. The series has now turned into a Best of 3 with it tied at one win each. While the Celtics' Game 1 victory was shocking, it may have been just the wake-up call the Warriors needed.
