When it comes to the greatest point guard of All-Time debate, Magic Johnson is typically the answer you get first. But is that still the correct answer? Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry is considered the top dog of his generation, and it doesn't look like he is slowing down anytime soon.
Stephen Curry's To-Do List To Be GOAT Point Guard
There are a few things Stephen Curry must do to be the GOAT point guard.
Finals MVP
One thing Curry will need to do is win Finals MVP, which would require him to win his fourth NBA championship. It would be one less ring than Johnson, but bringing four to the Bay Area would be monumental to his legendary legacy. Winning the championship wouldn't be enough. He has to win Finals MVP. Out of the three times the Warriors won the chip, Curry hasn't taken home the award. That's one thing all the greats have, and Curry needs.
One More Season MVP
Article Continues BelowAnother thing that would help Steph Curry reach GOAT status is winning another regular season MVP. Playing in a point guard-heavy league and winning another MVP award on the back end of his career would solidify his dominance over his generation. Guards are getting better, bigger, and faster, but the way Curry changed the game, everyone is aiming to be him. Some have gotten close, but nobody has been able to duplicate what Curry can do on the court.
Take The Threes Record
This upcoming season Curry will hold the top spot for most makes on the All-Time three-pointer list. The one category Johnson doesn't come close to being comparable. It's also one of the biggest reasons Stephen Curry has a chance to dethrone Magic and become the GOAT. His shooting changed the way basketball is played. It also changed the rules or idea of what's a good or bad shot. The game will never be the same, and it's because of Curry.
Barbershop Narrative
Lastly, Stephen Curry has to win the barbershop debates. Saturday morning conversations about sports in local barbershops occur all across the country. All of the biggest topics are discussed by local unofficial analysts, also known as barbers. Raw and unfiltered debates help decide who the real GOATS are. So if Curry can takeover the barbershop debates, it will help his case.
Even if Steph Curry doesn't do any of the above, he will be one of the greatest ever to play basketball. Diehard fans will consider him the best, and some fans will choose other players as their GOAT. Magic is still the top dog for now, but Curry can be the one to change that, or maybe it will be a future star. As the game continues to evolve, the GOAT will eventually change, but that's the beauty of the game called basketball.
