Draymond Green's indefinite suspension is over, but he's still not quite ready to take the floor for the Golden State Warriors. The four-time champion will “need approximately a week” to ramp up for game action, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, extending his absence for at least two more games.
The silver lining for Green as he awaits being cleared to play? At least he won't be losing anymore money while remaining sidelined. Green's effective 12-game suspension cost him $1,847,291 in salary, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks, also lowering Golden State owner Joe Lacob's luxury tax bill from $192.5 million to $183.7 million, a savings of nearly $9 million.
Draymond Green made his own bed with Warriors, NBA
Don't feel too bad for Green.
Article Continues BelowThe notoriously combative veteran made this bed himself, of course, his strike to the face of Phoenix Suns big man Jusuf Nurkic on December 12th just the latest in a string of unsportsmanlike on-court acts dating back years. Green's indefinite suspension by the league wasn't levied for that incident alone, but an increasing rash of similar events since last season headlined by his punch to former teammate Jordan Poole and choke of Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert.
He's not exactly hurting financially in wake of his suspension, either. Green is still due approximately $20.5 million this season, while the remaining three years and roughly $77 million on the new contract he signed last summer are fully guaranteed.
Green's ability to avoid the unnecessary violence that's become the identifying attribute of his game will go a long way toward informing the Warriors' short and long-term future. If he acts out again, Golden State will no doubt be more inclined to break up its dynastic core, rebuilding on the fly around Stephen Curry in the twilight of his career.
Green will miss Sunday's game against the Toronto Raptors and likely Wednesday's tilt with the New Orleans Pelicans. Don't be surprised if he's back on the floor on Friday against the Chicago Bulls, the start of the Warriors' four-game road trip.
