Golden State Warriors superstar Kevin Durant suffered a calf injury during Game 5 of his team's second-round Western Conference playoff series against the Houston Rockets last week, and many felt the Warriors were doomed.
Instead, Golden State responded by winning Game 5 and then by going into the Toyota Center and finishing off the Rockets in Game 6 behind spectacular performances by Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson to advance to the NBA Finals.
We seem to forget that the Dubs won the title in 2015 without Durant and also won 73 games and made another finals appearance in 2016 before he arrived, but Curry and Co. reminded us that he Warriors are still pretty good even without KD.
Fox Sports analyst Nick Wright said as much on First Things First on Monday morning, saying that the Warriors sent a message to Durant—and the league—with their big series victory on Friday night:
“This was a message to the 29 other teams in the league that have been waiting for three years for Durant to leave,” said Wright. “The Warriors reminded them they should still be the favorites going into next year. KD has been the greatest luxury item in sports history.”
With Durant's status for Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals on Tuesday night in question, many will likely have some doubts about the Warriors heading into their matchup with the Portland Trail Blazers, but Golden State has been in this situation before, and it knows how to win big games.
Doubt the Warriors at your own peril.
