Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr admits superstar point guard Stephen Curry changed his understanding of “what was a good shot and what was not.”
Curry is the best shooter in NBA history, and he often takes and makes shots that would usually be deemed “bad shots” for other players.
When Kerr joined the Warriors in 2014, he was initially skeptical of Curry's shot selection. However, the former Chicago Bulls sharpshooter soon realized that Steph's shot-making ability was something he had never seen before.
“He changed my understanding of what was a good shot and what was not,” Kerr explained Friday on 95.7 The Game's Damon, Ratto & Kolsky, via Marcus White of NBC Sports Bay Area.
“The first couple months that I coached Steph, half the shots that he took, I could hear my old coaches' voices ringing in my head saying, ‘That's a bad shot. That's a bad shot.' That was probably [a few] months into my first season coaching, and it just took that long to realize, ‘OK, these are actually good shots.' Because they were never good shots for anybody else who had ever played the game.”
Curry will eventually pass Hall of Famer Ray Allen on the NBA's all-time list for made 3-pointers. The Warriors legend and Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard are about the only two players in the NBA you have to guard once they cross half-court, as Curry and Lillard's range is limitless.
Kerr and the Warriors should be a fun team to watch again in 2020-21. The Dubs finished with the worst record in the NBA in 2019-20 before games were suspended in March.
Next season, Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins will make their debut as a foursome.
