About halfway through the first quarter of the Miami Heat's 91-85 win over the Milwaukee Bucks last night, Dwyane Wade played his first game in the South Beach team's uniform in almost two years.
The crowd at AmericanAirlines Arena was as loud as you have ever heard while Wade walked in the court. The superstar guard did not have any eye-popping stats, contributing three points, two rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks with four turnovers on 1-for-6 shooting from the field. But still, it was an emotional moment that the whole city cherished.
After the game, Wade spoke with NBA TV's Grant Hill through a satellite interview. The Heat legend revealed his retirement plans:
“This is it for me guys, I'm staying here until I decide to hang it up. You know, this is home and I'm so happy to be back.”
It is not the first time Wade makes a similar remark; after signing a one-year deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers before this season started, Wade echoed the same message. Per The Associated Press, Wade said back then:
“One day I want to retire in a Miami Heat jersey. I don’t know how that will happen, but I definitely want to make sure than when I decide to hang it up, that jersey is on… I want to make sure that I go out the way I came in.”
Wade also told Grant that it was not hard to suddenly come back and get used to playing with his new teammates.
“I think five of these guys I played with, we've been to the playoffs together… And I told Coach when I talked to him I said ‘I feel like I'm a part of the group already.”
The recurring smiles on Wade's face said it all. He was definitely excited to be back home and stay with the Heat forever.
