The North Carolina standout spent the better part of his two NBA seasons with the Charlotte Hornets, before being acquired by the Memphis Grizzlies in a three-team trade involving the Miami Heat.
Hairston was a three-point specialist in college, but it has failed to translate into the league, shooting a poor 29.5 percent from three and 34.3 percent from the field in his career, leaving much to be desired.
Houston owns the 23-year-old's rights to their D-League affiliate Rio Grande Valley Vipers, should he not make the 15-man roster at the end of preseason.
PJ Hairston averaged 6.2 points and 2.6 rebounds on 35.5 percent shooting over 66 appearances with the Hornets and Grizzlies last season.
