Los Angeles Clippers head coach Doc Rivers gave his own assessment of Montrezl Harrell's comments following the Clippers' 114-140 loss at the hands of the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night:

Harrell chastised his team in the aftermath of the loss, questioning the public assessment of the Clippers as an elite team and saying the Clippers needed to “wake up” (via Kurt Helin of Pro Basketball Talk):

“We’re not a great team. We’re not a great team…” Clippers’ center Montrezl Harrell said. “I think that’s what we need to realize and wake up. We’re a team that still has to figure out things to win night in and night-out.”

“Us as a team that should wake you up,” Harrell said of the boos. “Losing by 20-plus points on your home floor, getting embarrassed, and booed by your home fans, that should wake anybody up.”

Rivers seems to be doubling down on his postgame comments, in which he stated the Clippers are not lacking identity but need to clean up their act.

The Clippers have struggled to garner any positive momentum following a four-game winning streak that concluded on Dec. 13. Los Angeles are just 5-5 since that win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, and while they have notched marquee wins over the likes of the Los Angeles Lakers, they have also dropped games to the Chicago Bulls, Oklahoma City Thunder and now the Grizzlies.

As Rivers alluded to, the season is still young, and the Clippers are still adapting to a roster now centered around Kawhi Leonard and Paul George.

For his part, Harrell is already developing as a vocal leader in addition to his superb play on the court. The fifth-year center is making a case for Sixth Man of the Year, averaging 19.0 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 36 games off the bench.
