Blake Griffin will be one of the most hotly pursued free agents come summertime. His alleged impending departure from the L.A. Clippers has gotten new life with a recent report from Kevin Ding of Bleacher Report stating the 6-foot-10 power forward’s intention to move to either the Los Angeles Lakers or the Boston Celtics once he becomes a free agent.
The 28-year-old is currently in the fourth year of his five-year $94 million deal with the Clippers. When summer hits, he will become a free agent and other teams will be free to make an offer for the first overall pick of the 2009 NBA draft.
The Lakers have followed Griffin’s career for years now and he might just be the superstar signing the team so desperately wants. The team is also set to pick up one of the top three prospects in the upcoming draft and this will only add to their young and promising core. Perhaps the idea of leading a team of talented youngsters is something that appeals to Blake. A recent story stating his preference to stay in Los Angeles due to his attraction to the entertainment industry further adds fuel to this flame.
On the other hand, the Celtics were heavily linked to Griffin in the February trade window and appeared to be another realistic destination for the Oklahoma City native. The C’s have been one of the revelations of the season and the idea of joining a team with so much chemistry might be the motivation Griffin needs.
At the end of the day, the Clippers will have the final say. The team holds Griffin’s Bird Rights which means that they can offer him more money than any other team can. However, they will need to make a decision if they see him as the right man to lead them to a much-coveted NBA championship or would it be a better option to move on.
