Anthony Davis lasted just five minutes for the Los Angeles Lakers in Thursday's do-or-die matchup against the Phoenix Suns. AD tried to play through a groin injury but ultimately had to exit shortly after tip-off with the pain becoming unbearable.

After the game, Davis tried to shed some light on the injury that kept him out of what turned out to be a blowout loss against Devin Booker and Co.:

“I couldn’t move to my right,” Davis told Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports. “That’s why I reacted that way [in the first quarter] when [Devin] Booker drove left and I had to slide to my right. That s*** hurt. There was nothing I could do, but I just wanted to be out there for my team so bad.”

Apparently, some of his Lakers teammates did not think it was a good idea for AD to force himself to play in Game 6. Nevertheless, Davis brushed all this aside as he let his competitive spirit prevail in his decision-making. At the end of the day, he holds no regrets:

“Me going out there didn’t have anything to do with me trying to be tough; I felt I owed it to my team to try to be out there with them,” Davis added. “I knew the only way I was going to be healthy enough to play was to get some rest, but time wasn’t on my side. So, I tried to give it a go. I don’t regret anything. I’ll be fine. Our team will be fine. I like our chances when healthy.”

Davis clearly re-aggravated the injury, but at this point, it's too early to tell if this decision will have any impact on him in the long term. For now, though, AD and the rest of the Lakers will need to regroup ahead of what should be a particularly intriguing offseason for them.
