It's far too early in his career to put Kyle Kuzma in a box. In terms of positions, Kuzma's role isn't defined and that's a good thing. He's a versatile player and the Los Angeles Lakers seem intent on exploring this versatility with creative lineups.

There are multiple reports that Luke Walton is trying Kuzma out at center — and he's liking what he sees from the 23-year-old.

Mike Trudell of Spectrum Sports Network points out that Kuzma is working at the five spot to potentially replace Julius Randle's production from last year. It's not a perfect swap because Randle is a very different player from Kuzma, but it's a lineup that warrants a look from the Lakers coaching staff.

Randle is a much more physical presence, but he doesn't offer the same offensive versatility that Kuzma does. That being said, having a physical presence like LeBron James playing the four would mitigate some of the physicality that Kuzma gives up. Additionally, the other three players on the floor will be long, athletic players who should be able to help shoulder the rebounding load.

Small ball lineups are very trendy throughout the league right now. Used to the full extent by the Golden State Warriors, the smaller lineups with defensively-versatile players are meant to exploit mismatches in opposing teams and punish traditional big men who dislike defending the perimeter.

There's definitely merit to this idea and the Lakers personnel lends itself to smaller lineups. The frontcourt depth leaves something to be desired so playing Kuzma at the five is an intriguing option for the Lakers.
