After parting ways with head coach Luke Walton earlier this week, the Los Angeles Lakers are now prepared to meet with possible coaching candidates in the coming weeks. The team will even meet with one of those candidates next week.
Lakers management plans to travel East to meet with Sixers assistant Monty Williams between Games 2 and 3 of playoff series with Brooklyn, league sources tell ESPN. Williams has emerged as a top candidate for Lakers coaching job.

According to ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Lakers management plans to travel to meet with Philadelphia 76ers assistant Monty Williams between Games 2 and 3 of the Sixers playoff series against the Brooklyn Nets. Williams is apparently a top candidate for the Lakers coaching job, and has been thrown out as a name once Walton was gone.
With general manager Rob Pelinka likely staying on in his role for the Lakers, the thought is that he will meet with Williams to discuss the coaching job, according to Wojnarowski.
After spending two seasons in the San Antonio Spurs’ front office, Williams returned to a coaching role with the Sixers this season, where he’s been Brett Brown’s top assistant on the team.
Prior to his time in Philadelphia and San Antonio, Williams was an associate head coach with the Oklahoma City Thunder, but after the untimely death of his wife, he and his children moved to San Antonio.
Before the Thunder, Williams was also the head coach for the New Orleans Pelicans, where he helped the team make the playoffs in 2010 and 2014.
After an extremely disappointing season, the Lakers will now be looking for their sixth head coach in just 10 seasons, and will be trying to make it back to the postseason for the first time in nearly a decade.
