Head coach Luke Walton didn't have much time to get his players ready for the NBA preseason this year. The Los Angeles Lakers had only four days filled with two-a-day practices to work on what Walton wants to implement for the 2017-18 campaign which is only a few weeks away.
On the final day of training camp at the team's practice facility in El Segundo on Friday, Walton admitted more work needs to be done with this new-look Lakers squad. Although camp has officially concluded, it is far from over with Walton to use the preseason to help get his team better prepared for the 82-game grind.
“Training camp is not over for us,” Walton said. “We got a lot more to do. Like I said before we started camp, we focused on a select amount of coverages, items, whatever you want to call them, and that's where we've given all of our time to. So there's a lot more we can get in before the season starts, but we're going to use the whole preseason to get all that in.”
With so many new faces on the roster, there was no way four days was going to cut it for this Lakers team. Fortunately, they'll have six preseason games in which to work out all the issues that may arise before taking on the L.A. Clippers in the season opener on Oct. 19.

Although returning players like Brandon Ingram, Julius Randle, Jordan Clarkson, and Larry Nance Jr. have a good sense of what Walton wants, the team will likely have three new starters this year.
Lonzo Ball, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Brook Lopez will probably round out the starting lineup along with Randle and Ingram. All three of these players need to learn the system while adjusting to their new surroundings in Los Angeles and there's no telling how long that may take.
The second-year head coach will get a look at his revamped squad on Saturday with the Lakers open the preseason against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
