Magic Johnson surprised the basketball world with his sudden announcement of stepping down as the Los Angeles Lakers' president of basketball operations on Tuesday night. And just to put to rest speculation of the news just being temporary, Johnson reiterated that this is a done deal and that there is no way he could be convinced to reconsider.

Johnson's decision was a huge shock considering that the Hall of Famer had a relatively decent run as president, most notably landing the current GOAT in LeBron James during the summer. It's not Johnson's fault that they were two or three players short of their purported target as Paul George decided to stay with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Kawhi Leonard was shipped to the Toronto Raptors instead, all of which were beyond his control.

In hindsight, however, the Lakers had a disappointing tail end to the season which is probably all the explanation needed for Johnson to bid adieu to the purple and gold. Not only did they miss out on swinging a deal for the New Orleans Pelicans' Anthony Davis (despite allegedly offering the entire cupboard sans James) but they also traded a promising young center in Ivica Zubac to their crosscourt rivals the Los Angeles Clippers in a transaction that still baffles fans and observers alike.

But the exclamation point to their year was undoubtedly missing the playoffs for the sixth year in a row – a shortcoming that typically shouldn't be all that bad except they now boast James whose postseason trip streak dates back to 2005 including going as deep as the NBA Finals since 2010.
