This past weekend, longtime NBA reporter Peter Vecsey broke the story about the Los Angeles Lakers are facing possible tampering charges involving Paul George prior to him being traded from the Indiana Pacers to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

It is a story that came by complete surprise with no previous acknowledgment of this situation looming over the Lakers. In the piece, Vecsey revealed that he did not speak to the league or any of the teams involved.

I did not try to contact anyone from the Lakers, the Pacers or the NBA regarding its tampering investigation, which would’ve virtually guaranteed leakage before I had the chance to break the story … a story I unswervingly stand by.

There is much truth to this belief given that the NBA or another could have leaked out the information before him. This gave him the ability to have full control of the story and not let it be manipulated by another source before he could get it out.

It is a story that has many wrinkles to it that could lead to a large punishment being levied down by the league on the Lakers. This could result in a loss of draft picks, fines up to $5 million or even the prevention of George being able to sign or get traded to Los Angeles.

In this day and age in the media with the usage of social media, it is often hard for a story of this magnitude to get broken by a singular reporter. It's a rare situation that Vecsey used to his advantage to be the one that can unload the huge news.
