3-pointers are not exactly something that’s normally associated with the Miami Heat. To many, they are just another mid-tier Eastern Conference squad still looking to join the ranks of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, and Toronto Raptors.

Glancing at their personnel and style of play, it also doesn’t appear that they are anywhere near dangerous from long distance. Paint monster Hassan Whiteside is the main option of the offense, point guard Goran Dragic, who mostly lives by shooting midrange jumpers or driving to the rim, is second, while the rest are pretty much athletic wings, combo guards, or bruising rebounders.

Heck, nine-year veteran Wayne Ellington, the team's most prolific shooter with 3.0 made threes per game, is just seventh among all Heat players in minutes and sixth in field goal attempts per game.

Yet somehow, the Heat are practically the deadliest 3-point shooting team in the NBA. In the clutch, they lead the entire league in shooting percentage from beyond the arc, and yes, it includes the seemingly immortal Golden State Warriors.

Here's Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald talking about the crazy stat:

“…there’s one thing it has done better than any team in the league, by far: Shooting three-pointers late in close games. Miami is shooting 47.2 percent on clutch threes: 25 for 53.
The NBA defines clutch as the final five minutes of games with a margin of five points or fewer.

By comparison, Golden State is shooting 33.3 percent on clutch threes (20 for 60) and Houston 34.7 percent (17 for 49)..”

This is not a knock on the skills of the players, but who knew that this group will come up with numbers like this midway through the season? It's arguably an even bigger surprise than currently ranking inside the top five in the conference.
