Duncan Robinson has been one of the many surprises the Miami Heat have enjoyed this 2019-20 season, as the second-year swingman has quickly become one of the most sure-handed snipers in the league.
The 6-foot-7 youngster is knocking down 3.2 3-pointers per game at a ridiculous 44.8% clip, good for seventh in the league, having knocked down 95 treys through the first 30 games of the season. At this pace, Robinson is in line to break Wayne Ellington's franchise 3-point record of 227 made triples, likely earning him a potential spot among the league's best shooters in the upcoming 3-Point Contest during All-Star Weekend in Chicago.
Robinson admits he has thought about the possibility of participating in the event, but only due to talks from his teammates:
“Only just because people keep saying stuff to me about it,” Robinson told Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald when asked if he has thought about the possibility of competing during All-Star Weekend. “It would be an honor, obviously. I’ve had that in my skill set my whole life. It would pretty surreal to be a part of it. But I try not to get too caught up in that and just focus on making shots and winning games.”

Players who are 3-point specialists like Robinson often do well in the contest. Dating back to 2000, eight of the 19 winners could be classified as sharpshooting role players, including Voshon Lenard, Quentin Richardson, Daequan Cook, James Jones, Joe Harris, and two-time winner Jason Kapono.
However, Robinson, whose work ethic is myth-worthy, knows he can't expect anything or take it for granted, rather choosing to be ready for the opportunity:
“I’ve learned that you don’t want to expect anything or feel that you’re owed anything. I could have put in the same amount of work and not played a minute. That’s just kind of how it goes,” he said. “This league is so competitive and I have an understanding and appreciation for that. For me, it’s that competitiveness and competitive spirit that I think at times brings out the best in me.”
If the 2020 contest follows the same format as the 2019 contest, a total of 10 shooters will be chosen to take part in the event, giving Robinson a strong chance to make it into that field.
