Erik Spoelstra's contract extension with the Miami Heat is for four years, according to Ira Winderman of the Sun Sentinel.

Spoelstra, who would have been entering the final season of his deal with the Heat, quietly negotiated a new contract with Miami president Pat Riley and owner Micky Arison.

Erik Spoelstra became head coach of the Heat back in 2008. He has a regular season record of 523-363 with Miami and a postseason mark of 71-47.

Spoelstra has won two titles with the Heat, both during the Big Three era with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. He’s universally recognized as one of the best coaches in the NBA.

This season, Spoelstra has a new toy to work with. The Heat acquired Jimmy Butler from the Phiadelphia 76ers in a sign-and-trade deal involving Josh Richardson. Spoelstra and Riley believe Butler is the perfect guy to carry the franchise in the post-Dwyane Wade era.

In a wide-open Eastern Conference, Miami hopes to make the playoffs after missing it last season. The addition of Butler will help the Heat in that regard. The four-time All-Star is one of the best two-way players in the NBA.

Butler averaged 18.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists last season with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Sixers while shooting 46.2 percent from the field, 34.7 percent from beyond the arc and 85.5 percent from the free-throw line.
