The Canadian Men's National team released their roster for the FIBA World Cup qualifying round later this summer, and there is one name noticeably absent from it, the Minnesota Timberwolves' Andrew Wiggins.

Rowan Barrett Sr. who is assistant GM and executive vice-president of the senior men’s program told reporters that initially, Wiggins planned to play, but something came up last minute that made him withdraw his name from consideration.  When asked exactly what that was, Barrett declined to comment. According to TSN, the reason behind it could be Wiggins' strained relationship with head coach Jay Triano.

“According to multiple sources, one factor in Wiggins’ decision to decline Canada Basketball’s most recent invitation is his strained relationship with head coach Jay Triano, stemming from his previous and only experience playing with the senior men’s team in 2015.”

In 2015 Canada lost a heartbreaker to Venezuela, and as they squandered a lead Wiggins sat on the bench. The guy who replaced him Aaron Doornekamp fouled with 15.1 seconds left to go in the game and set up the game-winning free throws. With the loss, Canada ended up missing out on the Olympics and it appears Wiggins hasn't forgotten about that.

Canada will also have another round of qualifying games right before the NBA season starts, and there is a chance that the athletic swingman could join the team for that round, but it seems the ball is in Wiggins' court right now.

All team Canada needs to do is finish in the top three of their group to advance to the next round, and they currently sit in second place.
