After the lowly Atlanta Hawks officially decided to release veteran shooting guard Marco Bellineli on Friday, there is a good possibility that he will join a playoff contender once he clears waivers.

According to an article written by Warriors insider Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area, Golden State general manager Bob Myers indicated that his team was in need of better bench shooting from behind the arc this season.

“I know there’s been a lot of discussion about shooting off the bench, and we haven’t been good at that in three years,” Myers said. “If you look at our numbers, we haven’t been a great 3-point shooting team off our bench. It seems to have worked a little bit.”

With the possible addition of the 31-year-old guard Belinelli, who was selected No. 18 overall in the 2007 NBA Draft by the Warriors, he would be an immediate improvement off of the Golden State bench in terms of bench scoring and a legitimate three-point shooting threat.

Other teams that could possibly go after Belinelli in order to bolster their bench would be the Washington Wizards, Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder as well as other playoff contenders.

During the 2013-14 season, Belinelli went on to help the Spurs win an NBA Championship over the Miami Heat and averaged 11.4 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game in 80 regular season contests.

Marco Belinelli shoots 37.7 percent from three-point range and is shooting slightly below that this season at 37.2 percent. In 52 games played for the Hawks during the 2017-18 season, Belinelli averaged 11.4 points, 2.0 assists and 1.9 rebounds per game in about 23.3 minutes of action per contest.
