JoJo's NBA career got off to a terrible start after he was the third overall pick in the 2014 draft out of Kansas. Embiid missed the first two seasons of his career because of a foot injury.
The first NBA contract Joel signed was his rookie deal with the Sixers. It was a two-year contract worth $9.05 million. Embiid got paid $4,427,640 in his first year, $4,626,960 in his second and played zero games.
Joel Embiid finally made his NBA debut during the 2016-17 season. He averaged 20.2 points and 7.8 rebounds while making $4,826,160. The Sixers exercised Embiid's 2016-17 option in 2015, so they had confidence in the big man even though the rest of the basketball world was calling him a bust.

Joel's extension was set to kick in during the 2018-19 season. Embiid made $25,467,250 and put up 27.5 points and 13.6 rebounds per game, so his newfound money clearly wasn't affecting his production on the court.
Before the 2019-20 season was suspended due to COVID-19, Joel Embiid was averaging 23.4 points, 11.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists for the Sixers in 44 games. He was set to make $27,504,630 this season and $29,542,010 in 2020-21. It is unclear if players' salaries will be affected long-term because of the NBA suspension.
Embiid has career NBA averages of 24.1 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists. If he can stay healthy, Joel will make a lot more money down the road for his family.
