Gary Payton does not carry any prior coaching experience other than his gig at the BIG3, Ice Cube's 3-on-3 basketball league bannered by former NBA players. Nevertheless, the former nine-time All-Star still has credibility considering he was one of the elite point guards in the league in his prime and has a ton of knowledge to offer with his 17-year experience of playing atop the highest level.
It's still unknown whether Payton would outright land a head coaching gig or start off as an assistant. Nevertheless, he did reportedly note that he would want to get the opportunity to work and mentor the young players in the league.
Payton has also been vocal about changing the coaching landscape around the NBA, particularly with the number of black head coaches among the 30 teams. As it stands, there are seven black coaches across the league. Payton hopes that number would increase and that he could land one of those gigs in the near future.
