Free agent point guard Isaiah Thomas, standing at 5-foot-9, has made quite the NBA career for himself despite being waived by the Los Angeles Clippers in February.

While there is no professional basketball being played in the United States, Thomas answered a fan's question on social media about breaking through in the Association in spite of his often-teased height.

“What’s the most important thing to have as [an] undersized player? Other then [sic] shooting … of course,” the Twitter user asked the 31-year-old former Boston Celtics floor general.

“I think as a small guard you have to be SPECIAL at all times,” Thomas responded on social media on Sunday evening. “Whatever that means then that’s what you have to be. They don’t give little guards anything so when you get your chance be SPECIAL!!!”

Isaiah Thomas was selected with the final pick in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings. After playing three years in northern California, he was traded to the Phoenix Suns, only appearing in 46 games with the desert franchise before again getting dealt, this time to the Boston Celtics.

With the Celtics, though, Thomas bloomed into an All-Star, making back-to-back All-Star Games in 2016 and 2017 and taking over for a then-playoff-depleted Boston team and bursting into the postseason only to be stopped by LeBron James during his second stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

While the last several years have not been kind to the two-time All-Star point guard, it's a mistake to say Thomas hasn't left an indelible mark on the NBA, especially for smaller guards looking to break through.
