New Orleans Pelicans officials were caught by surprise in the peculiar timing of Anthony Davis' trade request, giving them less than two weeks to find a suitable trade for him after informing them of his lack of intention of signing a long-term deal with them, according to Jake Fischer of Sports Illustrated.
In similar fashion than Jimmy Butler before the start of the season, Davis gave less than two weeks' notice when he told the Pelicans of his plans on Friday — giving them very little time to work out a potential swap before the Feb. 7 deadline.
The trade request was made public on Monday morning when his agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski of his clients' plans.
The brief time remaining before the deadline hits serves as a slight advantage for the Los Angeles Lakers to work out a trade, but the Pelicans are reportedly in no rush to trade Davis and will look for the best package available to them.
The Boston Celtics cannot trade for Davis until July 1, due to having Kyrie Irving, who like The Brow was signed to an extension of his rookie contract under 30 percent of the cap, putting him under the “Rose Rule” which only allows one such player in an NBA roster.
Irving is due for a new contract in the offseason, which can put him and Davis as partners if the Celtics pursue a trade then, as they are expected.
As for New Orleans, the organization knew “the writing was on the wall” since Davis ditched his previous agent and signed with Paul and Klutch Sports prior to the season.
