The New York Knicks drew plenty of flak for failing to sign a single star free agent this summer, but former Knicks frontcourt man Enes Kanter has nothing but love for his former team.
Now with the Boston Celtics, Kanter–who played in 125 games for New York–told Alex Kennedy of HoopsHype that he thinks that the Knicks will be winners in the near future:
Article Continues BelowThey have all of the tools. You get to live in one of the best cities in the world, Madison Square Garden is obviously rocking every night and they have good people around. This year, they just didn’t get lucky. But I’m sure in a couple years, they’re going to get a lot of free agents because of how good the city is, how good MSG is and because they have good people in the organization. I’m sure they’re going to turn things around and become really, really good.
New York had enough cap space to sign a pair of superstar free agents to max-level deals. However, they struck out on their primary targets–Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving–and eventually allotted that cap space to an assortment of journeyman starters and depth pieces.
Julius Randle headlined the signings, with the likes of Bobby Portis, Taj Gibson, Wayne Ellington and Elfrid Payton joining him. That said, the Knicks now have a rather deep nucleus of players to support Dennis Smith Jr. and No. 3 overall pick R.J. Barrett.
The Knicks might not make the playoffs, but they should still be somewhat competitive in a depleted Eastern Conference.
