Derrick Rose appears to be on his way out of the Detroit Pistons. The New York Knicks have emerged as one of the frontrunners to land the former Most Valuable Player winner, as a reunion with Rose and Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau — Rose's coach during his prime years with the Chicago Bulls — seems to be forthcoming.

This report comes via NBA guru Shams Charania of The Athletic:

It is also worth noting that the Pistons have already announced that Rose will not be playing in Saturday's contest against the Los Angeles Lakers:

It is unclear if this is related to Rose's potential move away from Detroit.

Rose has seen a dip in his production this season as compared to what turned out to be another breakout campaign for him in 2019-20. Right now, the 32-year-old is averaging 14.2 points on 42.9 percent shooting, to go along with 1.9 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. Rose is also averaging just 22.8 minutes per contest as opposed to the 26.0 minutes per game he logged last season. Rose, who is currently dealing with a left knee issue, has also missed seven games this season for Detroit.

For their part, the Knicks have more than a few assets available at their disposal. A package of Dennis Smith Jr. and Frank Ntilikina has been floated in the rumor mill — a deal that would be beneficial for both teams in terms of their aspirations for both the short- and long-term.

Rose, who spent one season with the Knicks during the 2016-17 season, is currently on an expiring deal and he is set to be a free agent in the offseason.
