The New York Knicks hold the eighth overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft and it has placed them in the position to grab one of the top prospects in this year's crop of talent.

With that in mind, Ian Begley of ESPN is reporting that the Knicks are set to hold a workout with former Kentucky point guard Malik Monk next week.

The Knicks are scheduled to workout Kentucky's Malik Monk early next week, sources with the knowledge of the team's workout schedule told ESPN. Monk, one of the top guards in the draft, also has worked out for the Phoenix Suns and Orlando Magic. The Knicks, who have the eighth pick in the draft, are high on Monk, per sources. The Knicks like Monk, French guard Frank Ntilikina and North Carolina State guard Dennis Smith, among others, for the eighth pick, per sources. The Knicks had a workout scheduled with Smith earlier this week. Smith reportedly had dinner with team president Phil Jackson but did not end up working out for the club, sources told ESPN.

The Knicks do have a need to address their backcourt situation that could only heighten if they are unable to work out a new deal with Derrick Rose. There have been reports that he is looking for a max contract that could very well put him out of play for the team next season.

That said, Monk is one of the top guards that will be available in this year's draft. He's a versatile scorer that has shown he can be a factor offensively from the outside and can get to the basket off the dribble. In his lone season at Kentucky, he averaged 19.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game.

Monk set a couple of freshman school records with 251 made field goals and four 30-point performances this past season. This helped him earn the Jerry West Award, which is given to the top shooting guard by the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame, along with the Southern Conference AP Player of the Year citation.

His presence would provide the Knicks with another viable scoring option to add alongside their dynamic duo of Carmelo Anthony, if he remains in New York, and Kristaps Porzingis. If Monk is still available when the Knicks are on the clock, he could be their likely selection.
