It may have taken longer than expected, but Russell Westbrook ultimately decided to re-sign with the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday, making him the owner of the biggest contract in NBA history. The deal is worth $205 million for five years, which will keep him in Oklahoma City until the 2022-23 season.

When asked what took so long to ink the extension, the reigning MVP opted to remain mum about it. He then discussed, via ESPN's Royce Young, the good relationship he has with the team’s general manager, Sam Presti, instead.

“I'd prefer not to do that,” Westbrook said.

“We have a good relationship where we don't have to make sure everybody knows exactly the time and date when I told him, but all that matters is we're on the same page about everything and me taking the summer to enjoy the things that I discussed already.”

Now with a new deal secured, Westbrook can focus once again on leading the Thunder to greater success. The good news for him is they now have more talent in their fold, with the addition of Paul George and Carmelo Anthony. If he can co-exist with the two All-Star forwards right away, the team will be geared to challenge the other title favorites in the West, and could even make its way to the NBA Finals, if everything pans out well.

The new deal may have taken all summer before it was finalized, but what’s important for both parties is that they have reached an agreement and appear to be very pleased to extend their partnership.
