The Philadelphia 76ers recently got a shot in the arm with the return of Markelle Fultz to the lineup, but it appears that the Sixers now have a new hurt key player to deal with.

Against the New York Knicks at home Wednesday night, Fultz collided with Joel Embiid during a botched hand-off play early in the second period, leaving Embiid crumpled to the floor. Embiid exited the game and was later ruled out of it, but if it’s any consolation for the Sixers, they received news that the All-Star center did not suffer a concussion.

Expect the Sixers to handle Embiid’s latest injury with extra care. According to Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Sixers have brought Embiid to a hospital to make sure that the big man will have sufficient tests done.

Joel Embiid has dealt with a number of injuries before, which have robbed him of the opportunity to play in his first two seasons in the NBA since being drafted in 2014. He made his NBA debut in the 2016-17 season, and even then, he only appeared in 31 games. Philadelphia is getting ready for its first playoff appearance since 2012. A good as Ben Simmons has been this season, Philly can’t afford to lose Embiid, who is arguably the team’s best player this season.

Despite missing Embiid for the rest of the Knicks game, Philadelphia managed to eke out a 118-101 win, their eighth victory in a row. The Sixers might decide to sit out Embiid for this Friday’s matchup with the going-nowhere Atlanta Hawks, and if that would be the case, then Amir Johnson and Richaun Holmes will see an increase in minutes.
