Green, who spent his first year with the Cleveland Cavaliers, has spent most of his NBA career donning the Spurs black and white. Known as a sharpshooter from downtown, Green was also named into the NBA All-Defensive Team in 2017. He also won his first championship in 2014. The former Tar Heel signed a four-year, $40 million deal to re-sign with the team in 2015.
Prior to opting in, Green said that his priority is longevity. As reported by Jabari Young of the San Antonio News-Express:

“I think longevity is the key for must guys especially for guys that are getting older,” said Green. “But there is a lot of options that come into play and (a long-term deal) has crossed my mind.”
His head coach Gregg Popovich also commented on Green's defensive ability, particularly his ability to block shots:
“He's a pretty special guy. People don't notice him a whole lot, I guess. But maybe they're beginning to (because the media) is asking the questions, so I guess that means somebody has noticed.”
Last season, Green logged in 8.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.1 blocks in 25.6 minutes per contest. He finished second on the Spurs with 80 blocks — eight short of his career-high. This is also the second time he's recorded more than 80 blocks in a season.
