San Antonio Spurs guard and NBA champion Patty Mills is enjoying one of the best years of his career. Mills is currently averaging 9.5 points per game, while shooting a solid 38 percent from the 3-point line. Statistics fail to show how important he is to the Spurs, as he has helped the franchise defeat the Miami Heat back in 2014 for the NBA title.

Mills decided that the Spurs was the best team for him and he didn't hesitate to resign with them on the first day of the offseason's free agency period, according to Nick Metallinos to ESPN.

“I think I owed it to myself to see what was out there, and although it [re-signing] came quick I thought I might be cheating myself if I didn't see what the market was like. The values of what this organization brings to us as players is what I'm all about as a person. At the end of the day, I don't think I was going anywhere. I'm a Spur.”

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich explained why Patty Mills is having his best season in the NBA, and why the stats don't tell the whole story.

“It's been tough for him because I've been playing him at the point guard position, at the wing, at the two-guard … he's been all over the place trying to help us any way he could, so it's hurt his numbers a little bit. His leadership [though] is better than ever. His ability to see what's going on on the floor, to understand time and score in a game, is better than it's ever been.”

The Spurs face a monumental challenge if they hope to get back to the NBA Finals. They will have to defeat either the Golden State Warriors or the Houston Rockets, the two biggest favorites in the West. By that time, Patty Mills is sure to have his hands full against top-notch competition at his position.
