San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg showed the ultimate sign of support for Spurs legend Manu Ginobili, who announced his retirement on Monday. Nirenberg will honor the 41-year-old Argentinian on Thursday, Aug. 30 with his very own Manu Ginobili Day, celebrating the 16 years he's given the franchise since breaking into the league in 2002.

The lefty captured four championships with the Spurs, along with two All-Star appearances and a Sixth Man of the Year award in 2008, despite modest career averages of 13.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.8 assists during his NBA career.

Manu Ginobili's career isn't as accolade filled as Tim Duncan's or David Robinson's, but his influence in the Hispanic community has been largely felt throughout the last two decades, bringing joy and plenty of memories to those loyal to the franchise.

The 41-year-old reportedly knew this would be his last NBA season, but gave it one last whirl during the offseason, hoping to re-ignite his passion, but it just wasn't the same — at which point he knew it would be time to hang them up after 23 years of professional service between Argentina, Italy, and his 16 years in silver and black.

Ginobili spoke with head coach Gregg Popovich to inform him and the organization that this would be his last season. The franchise will waive Manu Ginobili and incur the $2.5 million that would be owed to him if he were to play out this season in the ultimate display or respect.
