Gregg Popovich made NBA history on Friday night as the longtime San Antonio Spurs head coach tallied his 1336th win of his coaching career, taking sole possession of the all-time highest win total ever.

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr spoke on behalf of all the players who Gregg Popovich coached in a heartfelt message to the legendary Spurs play-caller.

“Let me just say thank you for everything you've done for me in my life, and all the players that you've coached over the year,” said Kerr. “I know I speak for all of them when I say how much you've meant to us. Forget the wins, forget the record, all that stuff. What is really meaningful to me and to all of your former players is just what you've meant to us on a personal level. How much you've helped us grow as people and the experiences that you've provided for us. The incredible run that we were all a part of in San Antonio. You are just an amazing coach and an amazing man. Congrats, this is well deserved.”

There are very few individuals who have encountered Gregg Popovich the same way that Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has.

Kerr was a player under Coach Pop for four seasons, winning championships with him in 1999 and 2003. They've also faced off as rivals as the rise of the Stephen Curry era coincided with the best years of Kawhi Leonard in San Antonio. Then later on Steve Kerr served under Popovich on the Team USA coaching staff, which Kerr will now handle going forward as Pop steps down from his duties.

Steve Kerr has seen Gregg Popovich from various vantage points and at different points in his coaching career and knows what kind of basketball mind, and more importantly what kind of person the Spurs coach is.
