Phoenix Suns rookie center Deandre Ayton has been largely overshadowed by Dallas Mavericks sensation Luka Doncic and the “Lukamania” that has engulfed the NBA in the first half of the season.

The 20-year-old is averaging 16.7 points, 10.7 rebounds and 0.9 blocks per game in his first season in the league. Yet, despite delivering as a top overall pick, he's not worried about the perception surrounding him.

“I don’t care. That’s on them,” Ayton said, according to The Athletic.'s Michael Lee, “The only thing for me, I want to win. This is an organization where we can make a lot of history and we have hungry fans and that’s the only thing on my mind. The only thing for me is to be consistent as a rookie, to keep playing hard, keep being coachable and just listen.”

Suns head coach Igor Kokoskov was largely seen to be a hire made to lure Doncic into Phoenix when first signed for the position, but later reports clarified he'd have a minimal role in the draft decision.

A Ryan McDonough-led front office went with Ayton over Doncic but Kokoskov isn't quite ready to dish out a judgment as to who will have the best career.

“We all have different paths,” said Kokoskov. “We all live our own lives. It’s a good story for media and they all compare. In 20 years, it’s fair to draw the lines and see where we are, what we achieve. Maybe we have two Hall of Fame players. And that’s a pretty good class.”

Ayton has had his share of defensive inconsistencies but he is only a year older than Doncic and has plenty of room to grow.

Not all players develop equally fast and some top out faster than others. As far as progress goes, the Suns should be encouraged with his double-double average, 60.6 percent shooting from the field and a sturdy 78.1 percent from the line this early in his NBA career.
