Despite back-to-back losses to the Detroit Pistons and the Charlotte Hornets, the Minnesota Timberwolves are still off to a decent 10-7 start this season. The addition of Jimmy Butler has been a key reason for their success even though Butler hasn’t been playing fully up to his All-Star standards just yet.

According to ESPN’s Nick Friedell, Butler believes there’s more to come from this Timberwolves team, which has a lot of room for improvement still.

“I think we can be so much better in a lot of areas,” Butler said. “Our main one being defense.”

The Timberwolves were an absolute trainwreck defensively last season, finishing 27th in defensive rating. They’ve improved slightly this season with Butler and Taj Gibson, but they are still nowhere near where many expected them to be under defensive guru Tom Thibodeau.

The main improvement still needs to come from their two young stars, Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins. Towns, in particular, remains quite a liability on the defensive end. He ranks 69th out of 70 centers in terms of defensive real plus-minus, per Friedell.

Minnesota should still be a playoff contender in the West with the caliber of defense being played at the moment. However, they have the ability to take quite a significant leap if Wiggins and Towns ever figure things out on that end of the court.
