The Minnesota Timberwolves are 4-3 since Christmas, and All-Star big man Karl-Anthony Towns is the main reason why the team has been winning games lately.
In seven games since Christmas Day, Karl-Anthony Towns is averaging 28.3 points, 17.0 rebounds and 2.9 blocks while shooting 53.6 percent from the field, 37.9 percent from beyond the arc and 76.5 percent from the foul line. According to ESPN, that's among the best in the league over that stretch.
Towns got off to a slow start this season because of all the drama surrounding Jimmy Butler. Ever since the Timberwolves traded Butler to the Philadelphia 76ers, though, Towns has been on a tear and is living up to the max contract extension he signed right before the season started.
Entering Tuesday's matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Towns is averaging 22.2 points, 12.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game on the season. The former No. 1 overall pick has 26 double-doubles on the year, which ranks eighth in the NBA.
If Minnesota wants to make to make the playoffs this season in the tough Western Conference, Towns is going to have to continue putting up these monster numbers on a nightly basis. The second leading scorer on the Timberwolves, point guard Derrick Rose, is currently out with a right ankle injury, putting more of an onus on Towns to carry the offensive load for Minnesota. So far, the big man is delivering the goods.
