Over the past couple of seasons, DeMar DeRozan has emerged as one of the best shooting guards in the NBA. He has shown a lot of improvement in his game, not just in scoring, but also as a facilitator on offense. That said, Dwane Casey is planning to give him more playing time at the one spot starting next season.
The Toronto Raptors head coach recently appeared on the latest episode of Sportsnet 590's “The Andrew Walker Show.” where he revealed his plans for the three-time All-Star. He then added that the move should produce more scoring opportunities thanks to better spacing.

“DeMar DeRozan, have him handle the ball a bit more as a point guard, a facilitator, a passer. Kyle Lowry moving the ball a bit more, spacing up. We don't want to give our whole ‘what we're going to try to do next year' away, but again, it comes down to passing the basketball and better spacing more so, than we know, one-on-one play.”
Last season, the Raptors were dead last in dimes with only 18.5 per outing. They also had the seventh most iso’s, with a frequency of 8.5 percent.
Should the 27-year-old USC product be successful in his new role, it will also give their opponents a lot of matchup problems, especially given the height advantage he has over other teams’ point guards. More importantly, it will be his chance to showcase another facet of his game that has not been noticed by many, which could be the key for his team to win more games, and strengthen their quest to contend for a championship.
