Toronto Raptors president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri just made a blockbuster move that shook the landscape of the NBA by trading for Kawhi Leonard. According to Blake Murphy of Raptors Republic, Ujiri will speak to the media on Friday, but Leonard won't be in attendance.
The enigmatic star has never been much for talking, but his absence is sure to lead to speculation. Toronto was not on Leonard's shortlist for trade destinations and it's unclear how happy he is with his new home.
Of course, Ujiri will have to answer questions regarding Kawhi's absence. Leonard may be dragging his feet all the way from San Antonio to Toronto.
Article Continues BelowBut then again, Leonard is notoriously tight-lipped. Avoiding the media is nothing new for him and his absence may not be significant. But it would certainly put Toronto and its fanbase at ease if he could set up a press conference and answer a few questions.
Leonard may be a one-year rental for the Raptors. It's too early to predict the future, but a Paul George scenario where Toronto can convince Leonard to re-sign is a longshot. The chances of the Raptors flipping Leonard in a trade deadline deal to recoup assets seems more likely than the superstar re-signing.
Ujiri will be asked all of these questions tomorrow and as of now, he'll do it without Leonard. It's safe to say that the world is patiently awaiting Leonard's first press conference as a Toronto Raptor.
