The Golden State Warriors currently own a record of 26-14 but since their 10-1 start, they have gone just 16-13.
Naturally, fans and media pundits are all coming up with their own ideas as to what is “wrong” with the Warriors, with some armchair psychologists discussing what could be going on in Golden State's locker room.
But could it be that the Warriors, who have won championships in three of the last four years and have been to four straight NBA Finals, are just bored of the regular season?
Head coach Steve Kerr thinks that could very well be the problem:
Article Continues Below“Lethargy,” said Kerr when asked about the reason of Golden State's frequent lapses this season, according to Marc Berman of The New York Post. “We’re not as interested (in defense) as we were four years ago. Not a slight on the team. Human nature.’’
The Warriors have slipped all the way down to 18th in defensive efficiency this season, an alarming drop from 11th last year and second during the 2016-17 campaign.
To be fair, the old adage that defense wins championships is true. As a matter of fact, before Golden State won the title with the 11th-ranked defense in 2018, the last team to win a championship with a defense ranked outside of the top 10 was the Los Angeles Lakers back in 2001.
Here is the thing, though: it's blatantly obvious that the Dubs are coasting and when you have four future Hall-of-Famers on your roster, you're probably going to be alright for the playoffs.
