Frank Martin enters a new chapter in his NCAA coaching career as he's set to become the head coach of the University of Massachusetts Minutemen.
Frank Martin, previously the head coach of the University of South Carolina, is expected to be announced as the new UMass coach on Friday.
Via Mass Live's Matt Vautour:
According to multiple sources, former South Carolina coach Frank Martin and UMass came to an agreement late Thursday night to make him the program’s new coach. An announcement will come later Friday with a press conference expected to happen early next week.
Contract details have not yet emerged as the two sides are finalizing smaller points.
Frank Martin joins UMass after a decade worth of seasons coaching the South Carolina Gamecocks, amassing a 171-147 record. His best season was in 2016-17 when he led the Gamecocks to an NCAA Tournament Final Four appearance with future NBA players Sindarius Thornwell, PJ Dozier, and Chris Silva.
However, Martin's teams haven't sniffed March Madness since then and was subsequently fired five seasons after their Final Four run.
Frank Martin now takes control of a UMass team that hasn't had a winning record since the 2014-15 season and hasn't made the NCAA tournament since the season before that.
