After much speculation, Utah football’s starting quarterback Cam Rising will return to the field for Week 6’s matchup against Arizona State on Friday. Rising hasn’t played since beating Baylor 23-12 in Week 2 but is now cleared to take the field, according to Action Network’s Brett McMurphy.

“Utah QB Cam Rising will start Friday at Arizona State,” McMurphy reported. “Rising hasn’t played since Sept. 7 vs. Baylor, when he injured the ring finger on his throwing hand, requiring stitches. Rising has missed Utah’s last 3 games.”

Rising made a tremendous stride in his recovery over the past few weeks, returning to nearly all Utah football practice reps since Tuesday, including Thursday’s final walkthrough. The Utes went 2-1 without Rising.

Freshman quarterback Issac Wilson guided Utah to two consecutive victories in Weeks 3 and 4 against Utah State and Oklahoma State before losing to Arizona 23-10 in last week’s matchup. Wilson threw for 280 yards on 20-of-40, one touchdown, and two interceptions.

After Arizona snapped the Utes’ undefeated record, Utah football’s head coach Kyle Whittingham encouraged starting quarterback Cam Rising triumphant return ahead of Week 6’s matchup against Arizona State. Whittingham reiterated that Rising was doing everything he could to get back to the field and wasn’t backing down from the Wildcats, per KSL.com Sports’ Josh Furlong.

“All I’ll say is Cam Rising wants to play more than anybody. And when he’s able to, he will. It’s not like [he’s] able to play and not going. I mean, that’s not the case. I’m not sure what you mean when you say he’s taking heat. I’m not on social media. I don’t know anything that’s going on out there. So, I don’t know where that’s coming from. But I can tell you for certain that he wants to play. And as soon as he gets the go-ahead, he will play. And we hope it’s this next game,” Whittingham said, Josh Furlong of KSL.com Sports.

Utah will take on Arizona State on Friday night.
