It has been shown over the years that anything can happen in the unpredictable world of college football. One media member believes that Vanderbilt will pull off arguably one of the biggest shockers in the sport’s history.

The SEC preseason media poll was released on Friday, and to not much of a surprise, both Georgia and Alabama were picked to win their respective divisions in the upcoming 2022 campaign. Georgia garnered 172 total votes to top the East Division, while the Crimson Tide earned 177 votes to once again win the West Division.

Five different teams received at least one vote to win the SEC title this season, with college football powerhouses Alabama (158) and Georgia (18) leading the way. More so, Vanderbilt hauled in one vote to dethrone the Crimson Tide and claim the SEC title for the first time in program history.

Vanderbilt is one of five schools in the conference to have never won an SEC championship, and it is also one of four such programs to have not reached the SEC title game.

As expected, many on Twitter were quite perplexed that someone would even pick the Commodores to orchestrate such a shocker.

Much is expected from Vanderbilt to at the least bounce back from its 2-10 campaign in 2021, where it also failed to win a single conference game. Commodores head coach Clark Lea did note during his SEC Media Days press conference that Mike Wright will “enter” the fall as the team’s starting quarterback, and he will have the likes of returning offensive talents Will Sheppard and Rocko Griffin to help balance out the offense.

“We want him to develop as a total quarterback, which he has, and he has demonstrated leadership abilities too,” Lea said of Wright. “So we're excited for him to enter the fall as our starting quarterback. He knows that he has to earn that every day. … On top of that, we're fortunate to have a second quarterback with a ton of game experience and starting experience in Ken Seals.”

Vanderbilt is set to kick off its 2022 schedule with a pair of non-conference matchups against Hawaii and Elon.
